How To Create A Safety Manual

A good employee safety manual is a vital part of any business. Here are a few tips on how to put one together.

Gather Your Information

Getting together all of the information you will need to include in your safety manual will take varying amounts of effort depending on the scope of your business. You will also want to include all the necessary forms for reporting accidents and violations of safety procedures, as well as training information with regards to safety.

If your company has an emergency response plan for events such as earthquakes and the like, you will, of course want to include this in your safety manual. If there is not a plan in existence, you’ll want to create one yourself. Look around online for examples of what proper safety are for natural disasters that are likely to occur in your geographical region (meaning, of course, that you shouldn’t spend a lot of time on a hurricane emergency plan if your company is located in Montana).

While compiling your emergency manual, you will want to visit OSHA’s website, specifically in the resource section in order to ascertain whether there are any areas specific to your industry that must by law be covered in your safety manual.

It is absolutely vital that, at the end of your safety manual, you include a form which each employee signs to acknowledge that he or she has read the manual and agrees to abide by it. This not only increases employee engagement, it is also vital for providing some sort of protection from future litigation. Make sure that you have a lawyer go over your manual to ensure that all the bases are covered, as the contents could conceivably be used in a civil trial in case of injury.

Binding Your Manual

There are a lot of ways to go about this, but the best choice might be to go with a 3-ring binder. That way, any changes or updates can be easily made. Tabs and dividers can be used so your employees can quickly and easily fond whatever section they need to.
